Terracotta: An Environmentally Friendly Material

Every terracotta pot tells a story that’s thousands of years in the making. Made from earth and fire, it’s one of the most sustainable materials you can choose. It comes from nature, it’s durable, it doesn’t release harmful substances, and at the end of its lifecycle, it returns to the earth without a trace. But before that happens, there’s a lot we can do to extend its life, transform it, repair it, or even return it to the environment responsibly.

How to dispose of it correctly

Although terracotta pots can be disposed of as non-recyclable waste, there’s a better way to honor their sustainable nature: disposing of them as inert waste. Many municipalities have dedicated areas or collection centers (often referred to as “eco-centers”) that accept materials such as pottery, brick, and tile. Once there, terracotta shards can be crushed and reused as material for road subgrades or even as drainage in construction.

The golden rule of responsible waste disposal

If you only have small shards to dispose of, throw them in the non-recyclable waste.
If you have a large amount of earthenware to dispose of, on the other hand, go to a collection center or eco-center. You can dispose of the pots yourself or for particularly large quantities, arrange for pickup at your address.

How to Reuse it with a Bit of Imagination

How to fix a terracotta pot

A broken pot doesn’t necessarily need to be thrown away. In fact, it often becomes even more beautiful. Its marks of time tell its story, and repairing them is a way to prolong that in style. One simple and fascinating repair method is to reassemble the pieces and sew them together with wire. This is an ancient technique that combines both sturdiness and poetry. Simply drill two holes on each side of the crack, thread the wire through the holes, and tie it off inside to support the “seam.”

Gardening starts with shards

Plant lovers know that a broken pot always comes in handy. Larger shards can be used to cover the drainage hole in the bottom of other pots, preventing soil from slipping out and helping roots breathe. This is a practice as old as gardening itself, turning every shard into a silent ally.

New forms for new uses

If the pot is intact but you no longer need it, upcycle it! For example, by filling it with sand and placing it on a suitable stand, you can create an elegant outdoor ashtray.
Terracotta pots are also sought after by primary schools for various educational activities. Alternatively, if you’re creative, you can paint them and turn them into objects for a variety of different uses! The saucers can also become excellent outdoor candle holders.
